Israeli drone attack targets Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon
The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday, has further inflamed the already volatile situation along the Lebanese-Israeli border, and has also produced conflicting reports concerning the status of the deceased.
According to a security source speaking with a news agency, "an Israeli drone fired an air-to-ground missile at a civilian vehicle ... in (the village of) Qa'qaiyat al-Jisr, killing one person and setting the car ablaze."
However, a contrasting narrative emerged from the Lebanon Public Health Emergency Operations Center, which released a statement suggesting the victim was " a civilian, according to initial reports." This discrepancy in reporting has added a layer of complexity to the incident, raising questions about the precise target of the Israeli strike.
The Israeli military subsequently confirmed its role in the operation, clarifying that the drone strike was indeed aimed at and successfully eliminated Hassan Kamal Halawi. They identified Halawi as the head of Hezbollah's anti-tank unit in southern Lebanon.
In their official statement, the Israeli military asserted that "Halawi, during the war, was responsible for numerous terror attacks against the State of Israel. He facilitated the movement of operatives and weapons into southern Lebanon," claiming that "in recent months, Halawi continued to engage in terrorist activity against Israeli civilians."
