UN Reports Second Peacekeeper Death in Southern Lebanon Attack
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his condolences over the death of a French soldier serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to a statement delivered by his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. The soldier had been injured in an April 18 incident in which another peacekeeper was killed and several others were wounded.
Dujarric said, “This was one of several incidents in recent weeks to have resulted in the deaths and serious injury of peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL.”
He added that Guterres has reiterated his appeal for all parties to comply with their obligations under international law and ensure the protection of UN personnel operating in the region.
“Attacks on peacekeepers must stop. They are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and may amount to war crimes,” Dujarric said.
He further emphasized that all such incidents must be fully investigated and that those responsible should be prosecuted and held accountable.
Separately, French authorities confirmed the death of Anicet Girardin, who had been evacuated to France for medical treatment after being wounded in the same attack that killed Adjutant Florian Montorio and injured two additional French personnel serving with UNIFIL.
