Renewed Assaults, Devastation in Southern Lebanon

(MENAFN) Fresh bombardments hit parts of southern Lebanon on Saturday, just 24 hours after a temporary truce agreement was prolonged during discussions held in Washington.

According to local reports, the air raids targeted multiple southern communities, triggering a sudden flight of citizens seeking safety in the capital city and other urban centers. Prior to the bombardments, the military had issued warnings instructing civilians in several regional villages to immediately relocate. This followed an assault the previous day directed at a local medical facility, which resulted in the loss of six lives, half of whom were emergency responders, as stated by reports.

These escalations transpired right after diplomatic representatives concluded high-level talks in the United States, continuing a rare series of discussions between neighboring nations that lack formal diplomatic ties. Meanwhile, local armed factions remain strongly opposed to these diplomatic tracks and have persisted in launching operations against opposing forces since the initial ceasefire was established in mid-April.

Furthermore, recent bombardments in coastal urban areas left dozens wounded within residential zones and caused widespread devastation near historic landmarks. Reflecting on the scale of the damage, one wounded local craftsman stated, "They destroyed the entire neighbourhood." He added, "They are emptying the south of its population... it's a real occupation. We want a solution."

Despite the sudden resurgence of hostilities, the diplomatic team involved in the Washington discussions expressed approval regarding the decision to prolong the temporary truce for an additional 45 days.
