Israel Plans to Expand Its Air Campaign in Lebanon

(MENAFN) Israel is lobbying Washington for authorization to extend its air campaign into Beirut, Israel's Channel 12 reported Sunday, signaling a potentially dramatic escalation of military operations in Lebanon.

The broadcaster revealed that Israeli officials had submitted formal requests to Washington seeking clearance to broaden military operations and conduct airstrikes on the Lebanese capital.

According to the report, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued that Beirut should not remain outside the scope of Israeli attacks and that limiting operations to other areas of Lebanon undermines Israel's objectives.

The Israeli military has reportedly presented the country's political leadership with multiple operational blueprints in recent days, among them strike scenarios targeting Beirut that would necessitate civilian evacuation measures, Channel 12 added.

An Israeli official cited in the report claimed that the administration of US President Donald Trump has shown greater openness toward the proposal, although no final approval has yet been granted.

The report said Israeli military operations remain subject to American restrictions — a constraint Netanyahu's government appears eager to see loosened.

US officials had not issued any immediate response to the report at the time of publication.

The push for expanded strikes comes despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was subsequently extended for 45 days beginning May 17, following indirect negotiations brokered by Washington. Israeli forces have nonetheless continued striking targets across Lebanon.

The human toll has been severe: Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed more than 3,400 people across the country, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
