Netanyahu Orders Beirut Strikes, Shattering US-Brokered Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday directed the military to launch strikes against Beirut's Dahiyeh district, framing the assault as retaliation for what he characterized as Hezbollah's "repeated violations" of the fragile ceasefire currently in place across Lebanon.

Netanyahu claimed he and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had jointly ordered the army to "strike terrorist targets" in the area — a move that marks a dramatic escalation in hostilities.

The strikes were ordered in direct defiance of a US-mediated ceasefire that came into force on April 17 and was subsequently extended through early July, raising urgent questions over the agreement's viability.

The human toll of Israel's continuing campaign across Lebanon continues to climb. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed more than 3,400 people nationwide.
