Italy’s Mattarella Warns Lebanon Strikes Risk Wider War

(MENAFN) Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Monday sharply criticized Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon, warning that the attacks are inflicting heavy suffering on civilians and increasing the danger of a broader conflict across the Middle East.

Speaking to members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Italian state, Mattarella said instability in the region continues to deepen and cautioned that destructive patterns of behavior can quickly spread beyond their original source.

“The chaos in the Middle East is unfortunately clear, serving as a reminder that harmful practices can spread rapidly and attract followers,” Mattarella said in an address to the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Italian state.

He pointed to the war in Gaza as a “clear example” of escalating regional tensions and stressed that the threat of a wider confrontation stretching from Iran throughout the Middle East remains significant.

Mattarella said the conflict is already “severely and unjustly affecting civilian populations in Lebanon.”

The Italian president also warned against policies and rhetoric that deepen divisions, saying growing hostility could prolong violence rather than resolve it.

He warned that fueling resentment and hatred “will only lead us down the path of war and prolonged conflict.”

Calling for diplomacy and adherence to global legal norms, Mattarella said nations face a critical choice in addressing current crises.

“We can, in fact, decide whether to continue upholding the primacy of international law and the pursuit of shared solutions, or instead yield to a logic of confrontation and division,” he added.

Israel has continued military operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire that came into effect on April 17 and was later extended by 45 days following indirect negotiations mediated by the United States.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, more than 3,400 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Lebanon since March 2.
